About Yam shel Shelomoh

Yam Shel Shlomo is a work of halakhah by a leading Ashkenazi halakhic decisor of the 16th century, Rabbi Shlomo Luria, also known as the Maharshal. Luria opposed the method of simple codification of Jewish law employed by his contemporaries, Rabbi Yosef Karo and Rabbi Moshe Isserlis. Instead, Luria structured his works as commentary on the Talmud, analyzing talmudic passages and weighing the positions of multiple authorities before arriving at practical halakhic rulings. Originally compiled on 16 tractates of Talmud, only seven remain extant.
